Health focus group - previous achievements

Bristol Parent Carers hold meetings with parent carers and staff from NHS Bristol Trust, because they have asked us to help them improve the health services for disabled children and parent carers. If you would like to participate in any of the opportunities below - watch our calendar or email us.

Activities 2011-2012

Parent Carers asked:

1.   "Is there a way to improve the experience for disabled children and parent carers when they use the Children's Hospital?"

What Bristol Parent Carers is doing:

  • We have placed a representative onthe Disabled Children's Working Group of The Children's Hospital
  • Parents have contributed to the design of new disabled toilet facilities at the Children's Hospital
  • Parents have contributed to a proposal of ways to help parent carers who need to stay at the bedside of their disabled children when admitted as inpatients.
What the local authorities are doing:
  • The Disabled Children's Working Group is pursuing an Action Plan to support parents at their children's bedside
  • NHS Bristol Trust has developed a hospital passport system. This passport will contain the details and requirements of each disabled children, and ensure that this information is available for staff as the child moves between departments.
Parent Carers asked:

2.   "Is there a way to better understand how Community Health services are provided across Bristol?"

What Bristol Parent Carers is doing:

  • We have placed a representative onthe Complex Needs Framework Board
  • We asked to help develop parent-friendly versions of the clinical pathways for diagnosis (see below)
  • Parents of children with different disabilities are meeting with health (and Barnardos) staff to share their experience of the diagnosis process and what support is offered afterwards - if you want to take part, contact us
What the local authorities are doing:
  • The Community Children's Health Partnership (CCHP) is developing clinical pathways for their staff, to ensure that there is a standardised approach across Bristol for the diagnosis of, and response to, different disabilities.
