Use of Short Breaks Capital Funds for New Changing Places Toilets

CHANGING PLACES TOILETS IN BRISTOL

2017 Update   -   We've been working with the Council and private venues about improving the Changing Places facilities available - including new ones at Cribbs Causeway Mall, City Hall, and the Bristol Family Cycling Centre; Cabot Circus has agreed to extend opening hours so that you can enjoy the cinema and restaurants at night; all Bristol Everyone Active Centres have agreed to allow access to the toilets without paying for a sports session.

Children and young people that require specialist toilet/changing facilities and their families are very restricted in what they are able to do in Bristol, and its outskirts. Bristol Parent Carers continue to survey the available “Changing Places toilets" – ones that include an adjustable bench and hoist, so that it is easier for families to plan their time out around Bristol.

We have an Updated interactive map – found here, showing the new facilities that have recently opened. Every toilet open during the day is marked – please check the opening hours, some are limited. You will also see a moon symbol whenever a venue is open during the day and at night – please check, evening opening is limited. The map will show you the location, opening hours, and a contact phone number. (Note: our map shows more toilets than the official Changing Places website as not all of them are registered, but do visit their website for toilets further afield)

The Managers of all the toilets on our map have been contacted and assure us that they will allow access by passing families. To discover the facilities available at each site and how to enter them, see the summary tables attached, sorted by area:

This information will be updated regularly, so please check back here – also please provide feedback if you find any mistakes / or any new premises.

Once you know where you are going, you can sometimes find pictures if you search for the place on the DisabledGo Access Guide.

Availability of Changing Places toilets at weekends and in the evening is very limited; and even during the day, not many toilets are in places where you want to go out and about with your family for a fun break. So BPC has used the survey information to request Bristol City Council to help. They have agreed to use some of the Short Breaks Capital funding to install some more Changing Places toilets in useful places - they are currently working with Colston Hall to install one - this will give you a facility in the city centre in the evenings. We will update you as this work is undertaken.

For festivals and open-air events, there is a company now that can provide a mobile Changing Places toilet - Mobiloo, click here. Families, organisations, and event organisers can hire the Changing Places toilet with a driver or self-drive. So for the summer round of open-air events in Bristol, lobby the festival organisers to hire one, or use your school or facebook group to get together and hire the toilet yourselves!
