Learn what to expect and how to help your child prepare for the transition to secondary school.\n\n\nWelcome to Moving to Year 7 with SEND: What to Expect and How to Prepare. \nJoin Bristol Parent Carers and Dr Jude Liberman from Bristol Educational Psychology Service on Wednesday 8th July at 7PM. \nThe move to secondary school is a big step – new building\, new routines\, new expectations. For children and young people with SEND\, that change can feel even bigger. \nThis session will be recorded so we can share it with other families afterwards\, and so you can revisit it yourself at a later date. Recordings are securely stored and will be available for 60 days. \nIn this session\, we will cover: \n\nChildren and parent carers common worries about secondary school (eg. organisation\, friendships)\nWhat is different about secondary school\nHow you can help as a parent carer particularly over the summer\nHow you can expect secondary schools to prepare for your child\n\nWe’ll share clear information and allow time for questions\, so you come away from the session feeling more prepared. \nPlaces are free\, but if you’re able to make a small donation to help us continue offering free sessions to as many families as possible\, we’d be incredibly grateful. \n*Please note\, to attend this session for free you must live in Bristol (your bin will be collected by Bristol City Council)\, or your child must attend a school in the Bristol city area. You must also have a child with Special Educational Needs\, but they do not need to have a diagnosis.

Volunteering is flexible and can be tailored around your family\, interests and availability. Our in person sessions are a great way to connect with other parent carers in a welcoming space\, learn more about local services\, and help shape future activities in your community. \nPlaces are free and refreshments will be provided for everyone attending. All views are welcome. \nIn this session we will explore the following questions: \n\nAs a parent of a child with SEND\, what are your biggest challenges as a family in your local area?\n\n\nWhat are the main reasons it is difficult for your family to access SEND support locally?\n\n\nWhat changes would you like to see in local SEND support services that would make you want to use them?\n\n\nWhat would you like to see locally that would make you and your family feel more connected\, informed and empowered?\n\nBristol Parent Carers engage with thousands of parent carers every year through our peer support\, practitioner-led sessions and our annual SEND event. \nThe feedback we hear the most is that parent carers are not listened to early enough. We know there are many reasons for this\, such as school capacity\, budgets\, lack of knowledge and understanding of lived experience. \nThe impact on families is huge\, causing financial issues\, an increase in health conditions for parent carers and the general wellbeing of the whole family. \nThese experiences are exaggerated for parent carers from under-represented groups\, particularly parent carers from areas of high deprivation\, a Global Majority background\, and Gypsy Roma and Traveller groups. \n*Please note\, to attend this session you must live in Hartcliffe or Withywood\, or your child must attend a school in the Hartcliffe and Withywood area. We are happy to talk through any problems or issues you are facing over a nice cup of tea (or coffee!) and you can find out more information on what support is available locally for your child or a child you care for. \nIf you need additional support to access this coffee morning such as support with English or other adjustments\, please let us know. \nAn important role of the Parent Carer Forum is to hear about the experiences of parent carers in Bristol. We would like to hear from you about your experiences with SEND services so that we can be sure that your voice is heard and that we can shape the future of SEND services together.

DESCRIPTION:South Bristol Coffee Morning with Bristol Parent Carers\n\n\nWe’re delighted to host our friendly\, monthly Coffee Mornings in South Bristol — a welcoming\, relaxed space for parent carers of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to connect\, unwind and feel supported. \nWhether you’re looking for a moment of calm\, and hoping to meet others who truly get it\, you’ll be met with warmth\, understanding and a community that’s here for you. \nAlthough the atmosphere is relaxed and informal\, we do ask that families book a free place via Eventbrite so we can manage numbers and make sure the space is comfortable for everyone. We also know that life as a SEND parent or carer can be unpredictable — if you book and then can’t make it\, please don’t worry. You’re always welcome to join us next time. \nAt each session\, our reps and other local families will be on hand for supportive conversation\, whether you’d like to chat about challenges\, share experiences\, or simply enjoy a quiet moment with others who understand. \nYou’ll often also find other local services joining us\, offering everything from carer support advice to information about events and opportunities in the area.

SUMMARY:Neurodiversity without a diagnosis
DESCRIPTION:Navigating supporting your neurodivergent child without a diagnosis\n\n\nWelcome to Neurodiversity without a diagnosis. Join Bristol Parent Carers and Paul Ford on 28th September at 7pm. Many children experience differences in the way they think\, communicate\, learn and respond to the world around them\, but not every child has a diagnosis. Some families may be waiting for an assessment\, while others may simply recognise that their child experiences the world differently. This practical and supportive session is for parents and carers of children who may be autistic\, have ADHD\, or present with other neurodivergent differences\, regardless of whether they have a diagnosis. \nThis session will be recorded so we can share it with other families afterwards\, and so you can revisit it yourself at a later date. Recordings are securely stored and will be available for 60 days.In this session we will cover: \n\nLearn why a diagnosis can be helpful\, but why understanding your child’s needs is even more important\nUnderstand common characteristics of autism\, ADHD and other forms of neurodivergent needs\, and how these may present differently from one child to another\nDevelop and understanding of sensory differences\, communication styles and executive functioning which can influence behaviour\, emotions and everyday life\nLearn practical strategies to reduce stress\, support emotional regulation and build on your child’s strengths\nFind ways to work positively with schools and other professionals\, even before a diagnosis is in place.\n\nWhether your child is on a waiting list for assessment\, has recently been referred\, or you simply recognise traits of neurodivergence and are looking for a better understanding\, this session aims to provide reassurance\, practical ideas and greater confidence in supporting your child.There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions throughout the session\, making it relevant to your own family’s experiences. \nPlaces are free\, but if you’re able to make a small donation to help us continue offering free sessions to as many families as possible\, we’d be incredibly grateful.*Please note\, to attend this session for free you must live in Bristol (your bin will be collected by Bristol City Council)\, or your child must attend a school in the Bristol city area.
