Current Work: SAY BNSSG listening event feedback report

What families told us about SEND information, advice and support

Earlier this year, parent carers from Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire shared their experiences of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS). Families joined listening events, filled in surveys, and shared their views during peer support sessions. In total, 170 parent carers shared their experiences to help improve the service for families.
Many families said it really helps to speak to someone who understands SEND and can explain things clearly. Parents told us they want simple advice about SEND law, help with forms, and support to understand what their child should get in school.

Families also told us they need help earlier in their journey, before problems become a crisis. Knowing where to go, who to ask, and what support should look like makes a big difference.
Another key message was that relationships matter. Parents said it helps when they can talk to the same person who knows their story. It saves them from repeating everything and helps them feel less alone.

Most of all, families want services that listen and respect their lived experience. Parent carers know their children best. They want professionals to work with them, not against them.
What happens next
We have shared what families told us with commissioners, so the future SEND information, advice, and support service works better for local families. Parent carer voices will help shape how the service develops and how families get support earlier.
