You may start to hear schools talk about Neurodivergent Needs Analysis.
👉 This is expected to start from September
We know this is new, and you might be wondering what it means for your child.
So, what is it?
Neurodivergent Needs Analysis (NNA) is a way of building a picture of your child.
It looks at:
- what they are good at
- where they need support
- how they learn
It helps schools, services and families think about what support might help.
Why is this being introduced?
The aim is to help children get support earlier.
It is also about helping:
- schools and families to understand needs in the same way
- support to be more consistent
- make it clearer what help is needed
The most important things to know
- It is not a test
- It is not a diagnosis
- It does not replace an assessment
👉 You can still ask for an assessment (either locally or via Right To Choose) at any time and completing the Neurodivergent Needs Analysis will not delay access to an assessment.
If you would like more information regarding Right to Choose, you can read our leaflet: https://simplebooklet.com/righttochooseaguideforbnssgfamilies
Who will do it?
If your child is in school, the school will usually complete it.
If your child is not in school, a dedicated NHS team or NHS partner will do this.
You will be asked for your views too and if they are able to take part, your child will also have a chance to share their views.
What happens after?
The school or health team will develop an understanding of the things your child needs help with. This will help them decide:
- what support your child needs
- what changes in school or at home might help
For some families, the analysis may be part of their assessment journey. For others, an assessment may still be needed and can be completed through the usual assessment process with the analysis used to support the referral.
The analysis is designed to help identify a child’s needs and the support they may need. It should not stop a child or young person from getting an assessment for a diagnosis if one is needed.
As this is a new process, we are keen to understand how it works for families. If your experience has been different.
