Educational Psychologists (EPs)

At a glance

This guide explains what Educational Psychologists (EPs) do and how they support children and young people. It covers when an EP might become involved, how schools and families can access support, what happens during an EP assessment, and things to consider if you are thinking about paying for a private EP report.

You don’t need to read everything in one go, you can dip in and out, or use the section links on the right to jump to what’s most relevant for you.

Introduction

Many parent carers tell us they are not sure what an Educational Psychologist (EP) does or when their child might work with one.

To help answer these questions, Bristol Parent Carers worked with Bristol City Council’s Educational Psychology Service to create this guide.

The guide explains what Educational Psychologists do, how they help children and young people, and how schools can access their support. It also includes information for families who are thinking about paying for a private EP assessment.

We hope this guide helps you understand the role of Educational Psychologists and feel more confident about making decisions for your child and family.
