Welcome to Supporting Young People with Tics and Tourette Syndrome

Join Bristol Parent Carers and Lucy Toghill on Monday 8th June at 7pm.

This session is specifically designed for parent carers of young people who are either in the process of seeking a Tourette diagnosis or already have one.

This session provides essential information, insights, and actionable steps to help you navigate this journey with confidence, offering a deeper understanding of Tics and Tourette and equipping caregivers with the tools and knowledge to support their child’s ongoing needs

This session will be recorded so we can share it with other families afterwards, and so you can revisit it yourself at a later date. Recordings are securely stored and will be available for 60 days.

In this session, we will cover:

  • Understanding Tics
  • When do Tics typically start?
  • What can they look like?
  • The Experience of Tics: What it feels like to have tics, from the perspective of those who experience them
  • Tic Disorders: Overview of different tic disorders and how they differ from each other
  • Co-occurring Conditions: Commonly associated conditions such as ADHD, OCD, and anxiety
  • The Diagnosis Process: What to expect and how to prepare for medical appointments
  • Support Strategies: Practical tips for managing tics at school and how to create a supportive home environment
  • Influencing Factors: What can increase or decrease tics and identifying potential triggers
  • The Importance of Education: Educating the child’s circle of support (family, friends, school staff) to foster understanding and inclusion
  • Therapies and Treatment Options: Overview of available therapies, interventions, and management strategies
  • Future Outlook: What to expect as your child grows and develops, and how to prepare for the future
  • Available Resources: Where to seek help and support and how our charity can assist you during this journey
  • Q&A Session: An opportunity to ask questions and gain tailored advice

Places are free, but if you’re able to make a small donation to help us continue offering free sessions to as many families as possible, we’d be incredibly grateful.

*Please note, to attend this session for free you must live in Bristol (your bin will be collected by Bristol City Council), or your child must attend a school in the Bristol city area. You must also have a child with Special Educational Needs, but they do not need to have a diagnosis.
